Target Audience: Grades 3-8 Teachers/Informal Educators
Presented by AESP Specialist: Brian Hawkins
This webinar will demonstrate lessons engaging students in understanding the 4 forces of flight and 3 axis of motion to better understand how airplanes fly. A review of NASA's contributions in improving aircraft since the early beginnings of powered flight will be presented. A downloadable NASA CD called "Exploring Aeronautics" will be demonstrated to show how it may be used in the classroom. During the session a high performing classroom glider will be constructed.

Materials Needed (optional, if participating in activities along with presenter):

  • FPG-9 template (download from site)
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Marker or pen
  • Styrofoam plate
  • Penny



Expected Outcomes:

  1. Participant will construct a flyable Styrofoam glider for classroom use.
  2. Participant will demonstrate the 4 forces of flight and 3 axis of motion on aircraft model
  3. Participant will be able to explain in simple terms how airplanes fly
  4. Participant will be able to download from the web and use a NASA CD to explain the 4 tools of aeronautics.
