Looking for a Few Middle School Science Teachers to Help with a Last Minute Research Project

I know school is almost over, but there is that last week or two in June when it's pretty quiet. Could you take the time to help us with a quick, e-book research project? We're using standards-based curriculum and it shouldn't take more than a class or two. The topic is also a really important one for students heading out for summer vacation. If interested please email me and I'll give you the details. Thanks so much.

Aimee,

I've sent a message out to the Science group here on MSP2. Hope you get some responses!

Thanks so much Mary.

Hi Aimee

Have you had much luck?  Unfortunately, I don't have a full class period left with my kids after the final exam tomorrow.
Is it something kids could do independently?  Perhaps I can give it to them as an extra credit project.

Hi Carolee -

Thanks so much for getting back in touch. It is something they could do independently for extra credit and we would really appreciate your help. Here are the details:

The American Association for the Advancment of Science has developed an e-book about the science of how alcohol affects adolescent bodies, teaching students that alcohol affects multiple body systems and can harm the developing brain.

The research would include:

  1. A pre-test that students take to assess their knowledge of alcohol and science, which would probably take less than 10 minutes to fill out.
  2. Reading and discussion of an e-book entitled Understanding the Effects of Alcohol, which could take from 20-30 minutes.
  3. A post-test, again about 10 minutes, to understand and measure what students learned from the book and discussion.

All of the testing can be done online, and of course we would protect the anonymity of all the students. The e-book and material contained in it is linked to science standards developed by AAAS and other leading science education providers.

The e-book is part of a AAAS project entitled the Science Inside Alcohol and is funded by the National Institutes of Health. It’s a multi-pronged effort to teach parents, students and teachers the science of how alcohol can damage the adolescent body.

Here is a link to the e-book http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/alcohol/ebook2/pages/human-body.htm and the research questions can be found at  http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/alcohol/survey.php.

As a thank-you we can give your school sets of award winning science and health books. Please let me know as soon as you can and thanks so much for following up. I know we're very close to the end of the school year and it's a busy time.

Best Regards,

Aimee
