Social Networking sites in the Middle School Classroom

I have to teach my middle school colleagues the benefits of using social networking sites in the classroom. What sites have you used with success? Most want to have collaboration within the class, but there is the email account issue. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Two different tools come to my mind - Edmodo (http://www.edmodo.com/) and Twiducate (http://www.twiducate.com/). These are social networking platforms that are designed to be used within the classroom. I am going to try Twiducate soon in my classes. In a few weeks, I will be collaborating with a classroom in New York and we are going to use Edmodo as part of an activity. My students are going to be whale "research scientists" posting updates, questions, etc. for the students in New York to follow.
