Middle School Portal

the network for middle school math and science teachers

Hello All,

As we get closer to summer, the application processing time for student summer camps is getting into full gear.  I thought that it might be useful have a discussion about various opportunities for young folks.

The first one that i would like to share is regarding Air Camp.  It's a new camp where middle school students (7th-9th grade) from all over will spend a week (July 18th-23rd) at the University of Dayton.  They will do STEM/Aerospace related activities throughout the week at not only UD, but  Wright Patterson Air Force base, Sinclair University, and many other related sites.  The equipment and training that they will be given will even allow them to log their first half an hour of flight towards obtaining their own pilots license!

I was fortunate enough to help develop the concept and will help see it through its inaugural year as one of two lead teachers.  It's non-profit and was created by educators and civic leaders to help encourage interest in STEM related careers.  The application process is competitive, open to 40 students, and  is scheduled to conclude on April 15th.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Take Care,
Tom

Tom - That sounds like a great opportunity. MSP2 has a Teacher Opportunities page linked on the Main Page - in the MSP2 Resources box - we have added a few student opportunities to it but could also start a page strictly for student opportunities. Do you think we should start a student page? Kim
Definitely. I think that it would be nice to have quick, direct access to enrichment opportunities. Good idea Kim!
Thanks for starting this discussion. I did a quick Google search for "summer enrichment programs." Here are just 3:

- Summer at Rensselaer that includes an Animation and Gaming Academy for kids ages 8-10; Chemistry Summer Exploration Program for students going into 7th and 8th grades; and Robotics Engineering Academy for ages 8-16.
- Howard University's Centers of Excellence offers a Middle School Kids-In-Health Enrichment Program for 6th-8th graders interested in health professions.
- University of Cincinnati offers the The Howard Hughes Saturday Science Academy for 7th and 8th graders.

There are tons more, for sure!

I'd be interested in what any of these programs or what schools do to inform and encourage students from under-represented groups to apply and attend (e.g., minority students, low-income students, girls, students with disabilities).
