Our conversation has died down in the last few months - but I know you're still facing challenges in terms of reading, writing, and discussion. What burning questions or pressing challenges are you facing right now?
I teach robotics in an Engineering Magnet middle school. The course is titled 'Artificial Intelligence' though the canned course (IMO) does not introduce the subject well. I thought that I would like to have the students read 'I, Robot' by Isaac Asimov so that we could discuss the early expectations of Artificial Intelligence, and whether they are likely to be fulfilled. I teach 7th and 8th grade, and the reading level of the book is ostensibly 7.2. Most of my students have enormous trouble understanding the stories, at least partly because of the vocabulary. Our reading specialist told me to introduce the vocab before we read the stories, but it's really hard to get the students interested in this. Our school is supposed to use the Marzano method of teaching vocabulary - I have modified it a little. I would love any suggestions on how to get the students to enjoy the two or three stories I do with them.
