Why Does E=mc2? (And Why We Should Care)
Our next selection for the MSP2 Book Club is Why Does E=mc2? (of course the 2 is squared) and Why We Should Care. This book should appeal to science and math educators alike - what every part of the equation means to modern science as well as where every part came from - even the = and what it means to be "squared." It might make my mind hurt to think about time, space, distance, energy, and matter but I'm up to it! Hope others will join me. Thought we might start by hearing Einstein's own description of the equation - http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/einstein/lega-audio.html. This is part of an amazing site by PBS all about Einstein's Big Idea. There is a teacher's guide that includes lessons for middle school students.

woo hoo! I will pick it up after school today! I am coming into this with a small :) bias - but the reviews look great, and I have found that using (as mentioned) Einstein's Big Idea is a great way to help students "think big" and let them realize that they can!

That's great! I realize that this whole topic gets pretty complicated pretty fast (and wouldn't be developmentally appropriate for middle schoolers) - but the science and math history part is really fascinating and is something that would be appropriate. Looking forward to discussing what pieces and parts are appropriate.

I am looking forward to reading this! One of the things I hope it can help us think about is how we can encourage students to THINK scientifically/mathematically (both inside and outside of the classroom). Aside from building content knowledge and specific skills (which is super important), how do we get young people to develop those mathematical and scientific habits of minds that underlie success in these fields? I don't have the answer, but it's something I'm really curious about.
