Dissection in Middle School

I am wondering how many schools still have their students dissect frogs or worms in middle school. Is this an "old school" thing, does it not match the standards, etc? We are looking at it leaving due to not having the $$$ to buy new specimens. Any thoughts? Should it still be taught in middle school?

Hello, Amanda,
Glad to have another Ohioan here on MSP2. We're about 180-strong!

Since Kim has given you the tour, I'll simply say "welcome" and echo her encouragement to you to jump in and participate. A couple of places that you might consider starting out, given what you've indicated you "can help with" are--

- a conversation about Tips for New Teachers
- a discussion about science fiction literature to inspire students
- a discussion about tech tools and student achievement

Please share your experience and knowledge!

Hi Amanda - Welcome aboard! I wanted to tell you a little about MSP2 - we are using this NING network as a place where educators can connect with each other (through answers to profile questions and the advanced Members search) and also as a way to connect educators with exemplary resources and professional development opportunities.

If you look on the Main page - you'll see MSP2 resources in the upper left hand box - we have resource guides where we have sifted and sorted and contextualized resources on topics important to middle school math and science teachers, an archive of all of our past webinars, the ability to search the MSP2 collection, and pages of teacher and student opportunities and grants. Our newest resource guide is about Teaching With Trade Books and includes lessons for science AND math classes.

I saw that you would like help with instructional strategies - we've had a few webinars that might be of interest to you. You can download the recording from our archive page - http://wiki.nsdl.org/index.php/MiddleSchoolPortal/Webinar_Archive.

We have on the right side of the page our two project blogs - Resources for Math and Science and Connecting News. We also RSS feed the Free Technology for Teachers, Teach Engineering, and Science and Technology NYT blog feeds.

Please don't hesitate to post a question or comment. We are always looking for feedback and new ideas for PD opportunities and people who would like to present. Don't know if you thought about going to the National Middle School Association annual meeting, but we are also giving away free registrations to the meeting in Baltimore November 4-6. Click here for more information.

So glad you joined - Kim
