It all seems very familiar, except I would like to have only 30 kids each hour :)

Its sounds like you do the same things I do in many ways. I agree that there must be some easier solutions that do not sacrifice the opportunities for the students. This is where pulling ideas to share in the discussion is helpful. Sometimes you only pull away one thing, but lifting that one task can provide you with time to deal with other tasks. Every year I try to change one thing, find one new refinement, to my system. I'll finally have it all figured out about the time I retire.
Although, it would just be easier if someone would just invent the insta-clone so you could have one of you teach while the other grades papers.

Class strategies for English Learners can vary, depending on where you are at. Here in California, every teacher needs to be credentialed for EL, but not bilingual education. Most have a CLAD, which means you have taken courses in SDAIE strategies. This is essential since EL students are fully mainstreamed long before they are fluent in English. And they are placed into English only classes -full immersion.
A few years ago, the most common EL home language for my school was... Russian. Last I heard, my school district had over 38 languages. Sacramento is unexpectedly diverse. Too much so for bilingual education.

Do they have reciprocal credentials? Many states do. You definitely want to have an EL credential before looking for a job out here. It will make you very competitive in this job market.

Hi Dorothy
Welcome to MSP2!

There are a variety of resources available here, so I recommend you explore the site. Be sure to look at the resources on the home page. The NSDL site will take you to several sites that can help you in lesson planning, educational strategies, or opportunities to access other resources. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas to share, you can add those to the discussion boards. Are there any particular lab support/strategies you are looking for? What level of ELs are you looking at supporting?

There are also events you might be interested in. Events are recorded, so if you miss a one, you can check out the recorded session and add to the discussion boards. Let us know if there is something in particular you want us to address or topics and technologies you might want to learn about.

If you need any help or would like to see something added, just let us know.
toodles

Dorothy - I saw that you would like help with Managing Labs - we had a really good webinar on laboratory safety - thought you might like to listen to it.

Hi Dorothy - Welcome aboard! I wanted to tell you a little about MSP2 - we are using this NING network as a place where educators can connect with each other (through answers to profile questions and the advanced Members search) and also as a way to connect educators with exemplary resources and professional development opportunities.

If you look on the Main page - you'll see MSP2 resources in the upper left hand box - we have resource guides where we have sifted and sorted and contextualized resources on topics important to middle school math and science teachers, an archive of all of our past webinars, the ability to search the MSP2 collection, and pages of teacher and student opportunities and grants. Our newest resource guide is about Teaching With Tradebooks and includes lessons for science AND math classes..

We have have on the right side of the page our two project blogs - Resources for Math and Science and Connecting News. We also RSS feed the Free Technology for Teachers, Teach Engineering, and Science and Technology NYT blog feeds.

We've chosen our next book club selection - we'll meet online August 11 at 7pm to discuss Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out - hope you'll join us. Click here for more information.

Please don't hesitate to post a question or comment. We are always looking for feedback and new ideas for PD opportunities and people who would like to present. So glad you joined - Kim
