Thanks Doug, you make very valid points. I just wanted to share a link to the CC standards draft for those who may not have seen it. http://www.corestandards.org/ (under Standards, click on View K-12 Standards) Sarita

Doug Darfus replied to Ella Rogers's discussion 'Study Island Help Please'
I have never used it, but my son's school does. He attends WInchester Trail Elementary in Canal WInchester. They might be able to help you. Their staff web site is http://www.canalwin.k12.oh.us/wt/direct.php

Doug Darfus replied to Laurie Higgins's discussion 'Social Networking sites in the Middle School Classroom'
You might want to check with your IT person before developing any kind of lesson plan. All social networking sites are blocked on our school servers and we must sign an agreement that if they are used our employment can be terminated. We are told to…

Doug Darfus replied to Eric Biederbeck's discussion 'Using Twitter when the teacher is absent'
My first response is that students are being used as spies. Second, students have no way to tweet at my school because it is blocked by our filter and cell phones are not allowed. Third, how do you pay attention to the meeting if you're…

Doug Darfus replied to Mary Henton's discussion 'Redirecting students' tech activities' in the group Integrating Technology
I never thought I'd be the one to say such a thing, but here I am about to type it. We don't allow cell phones in the classroom. I don't have any problems with students texting because it goes against school rules. I also don't…

Doug Darfus commented on Mary Henton's blog post 'Problem Based Learning Meets Needs?'
I use to do a lot of PBL when I worked at the career center. I situation as simple as, "How do we build a saw-horse" lent itself to a ton of mathematics that the students (gifted, average, & learning disabled) in carpentry engaged in.…

Doug Darfus replied to Nina's discussion 'Math is the bomb!' in the group Math
I usually tell parents & students that math is not genetic. But I'm also honest ... not everyone will love math (just as I don't enjoy some subjects). My goal is to try to move students from hating math to at least making math…

Doug - I'm going to start a discussion about the math content that we've covered previously at the Middle School Portal. When you have a chance - it would be great if you would reply. Thanks!

Hi Doug - Hope everything is going well! was there a specific thing that made you report an issue with MSP2? It's too bad that so much is being blocked - I would think that UA would really be on the technology bandwagon. I think districts are slowly starting to embrace technology - hopefully in a couple years it will no longer be a barrier. Regards, Kim

Hi Doug - I know you are crazy busy - but I still wanted to update you on our free webinars and hope you can join us for one of them soon (and do one too). BTW - Judy Spicer is going to do one 9/30 on reading math textbooks!

We've had three Tech Talks so far - one on Interactive Notebooks, Moodle, and Digital Storytelling. You can get to the recordings of those by clicking on the Web Archive link.

You can see all our upcoming events by clicking on the Events tab. The next TechTalk topic is Using Wikis. We've got lots more topics to cover in the next few months - technology, pedagogy, content knowledge, all sorts of fun stuff! Any ideas on additional topics or feedback you have would be greatly appreciated! Kim
