Using Technology When You Are Away From Your Classroom (or other ideas you use with substitutes)

I've posted this before but if you have internet access I think using twitter is a great resource when you are out of the classroom. My team has a team Twitter account and I have a student logged ont…

Hi Davilla, I'll toss some ideas out there as well. I think you have the whole Pringle's Challenge thing that was basically run by Todd last year so I won't go into that. I'm currently working on a project with a school in Atlanta. My students us…

Great post Tom! I agree MSP2 is an untapped resource to connect with other educators. Todd Williamson and I have connected on the Pringles Challenge (which Tom eluded to- even if he thinks I'm in New Hampshire- really I'm in Vermont!) For the projec…

Thanks Diane, That is helpful. I will check out those sites with our report card group! I agree that we really need to move parents away from comparing their child to other students. That really doesn't show much- you could have a child that compar…

Hi Eric, I am a Canadian teacher teaching in Quebec... If you go to http://www.learnquebec.ca you may glean some interesting information about the use of rubrics, reform and overall evaluation we are now using. It is based on essential knowledges, b…

Thanks Tom, Those are great sites. I may be getting a district Wii to pilot so those will help. Love the idea of hooking up the internet browser too. Thanks again Eric

Hi Eric, Great idea! Here is a link- complete with activities that some are are using to help with math . Also, if you use the internet browser within the Wii, you can play these online games with the remotes. My family owns a couple of Big Brain…

Hi Eric, Actually, the first thing thing that comes to my mind is the way that certain school districts in Canada do report cards. I remember having this discussion with some friends from Space Camp and i'm pretty sure that much of their formal ass…

Interesting comments Karolee, I think it is important that you mention that work habits don't seem to matter since there is no accountability- something I'll have to mention. I think we are heading in the direction of the neighboring district you m…

The most important thing is to consider the purpose and use of the changes. How will it be use? Why do you need it? Will there be any accountability tied to this? Our report card has the letter grade (A, B, C ,D, F), but we also have citizenship an…

Kim, We are planning on using the new system next school year. The new system will be one that our middle school is developing. Obviously we don't want to reinvent the wheel so we are going to be using bits and pieces of other systems. The committe…

Thanks for responding Eric! More specifically, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to incorporate others subjects within a math class? For me, it is really easy to incorporate math and science. However, beyond just reading the word problems and explaining their work, I have troubles incorporating literacy in creative ways. I also struggle with implementing other subjects into the curriculum, such as social studies, art, physical education, etc. Thanks so much for all of your help!

Hi Eric,
I just posted a comment on the polar science page, then realized that you might not see it. I love the activities you described (snow shelters, designing long undies) and am actually working on the next issue of Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears - and issue called "Keeping Warm." Your ideas fit perfectly with our theme, and I was wondering if you might be interested in writing an article for us. Send me an email at fries-gaither.1@osu.edu and we can talk about it in more detail.

Thanks!
Jessica

Hi Kim and Mary

Thanks for the welcome! I'm very glad to be here. Now that I've got a full week of school under my belt, I'm ready to be more active! Gonna have to look into the book group and I'll add my answers to the questions in a bit.

Hi Eric - Let me second Mary's welcome! So glad to see that you joined! Let me give you quick overview of the site - on the main page - the resources that we have developed are on the left - MSP2 Resources box and our blogs. We have lots of events - technology, content, and pedagogy. The archived recordings of the ones we've done so far are in the link - Webinar Archive in the MSP2 Resources box. And we have lots of groups!

Thanks for adding your profile information and your "real" photo! It would also be great if you go back into your profile and answer two additional questions that we just added - I need help with and I can help with. We want people to be able to search by those parameters.

In addition, we've just started a book club - the fall book is Omnivore's Dilemma - it would be great if you joined in. Welcome! Kim

Hi,

I'm a 6th grade math/science/social studies teacher in Essex Junction, Vermont. I'm very interested in integrating technology in my teaching. My other interests include differentiated instruction and project based learning. Looking forward to lots of good discussion and sharing of ideas.
