Using Twitter when the teacher is absent

Hi Doug, You bring up some interesting points. I think I wasn't completely clear about having the student who is tweeting to me update me on someone who is very off task. I wasn't asking for student…

I use Probably Pistachio from Stuart Murphy's MathStart series as a read aloud during probability. Some of the other books in the series work well as very basic read alouds to start units. They are designed for elementary kids but provide good start…

Hey Eric, Twitter is blocked at our school, but I use Moodle to stay in touch with my classes when i'm out. An example: I went to UConn a couple years ago for LaunchQuest (A rocket project) and attended a conference with many speakers including an…

I have done this before though using NING. My students often respond to readings and are writing on blogs as a part of our class, so when I am gone, I put these activities into my sub plans and then if I have time while I am at a conference or works…

I do use Twitter to tweet assignments and announcements and parents and students get it directly to their phones. They love it.

My first response is that students are being used as spies. Second, students have no way to tweet at my school because it is blocked by our filter and cell phones are not allowed. Third, how do you pay attention to the meeting if you're tweeting you…

I was in this session as well and agree whole heartedly with Eric. One thing that I will offer is that I am currently doing a Service Learning STEM activity as we speak. It involves reducing electiricty consumption in our building. Here is a link f…

Hi Angela, Are you looking only to differentiate in terms of readiness or would you also like to include learner profile and interest. This year I've been making a real effort to differentiate more by both learner profile and interest and finding t…

Hi Kim, I do like the idea of giving students challenging more in depth thinking problems, however, I think it is very important that students understand the problem and what it is asking when you do this as you do not want them spending a lot of t…

I agree with both Nina and Pat who say that confidence is so much more important than any "math gene" I'd like to add that the confidence needs to not only be in the child but also in parents. I've experienced (and I'm sure others have too) parents…

Eric Biederbeck replied to Nina's discussion 'Math is the bomb!' in the group Math
You are so correct Nina, That feeling of belonging be it through the hands-on activities or even the discussion is critical. Does traditional math instruction work? for some yes but as you say, we really need to make sure we are getting the life-lo…

Eric Biederbeck replied to Nina's discussion 'Math is the bomb!' in the group Math
I think the more people differentiate their instruction instead of tracking students will help break down the negative conception that some students and parents have about math. When students feel they are stuck in the "low" group, I believe it decr…

Thanks for responding Eric! More specifically, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to incorporate others subjects within a math class? For me, it is really easy to incorporate math and science. However, beyond just reading the word problems and explaining their work, I have troubles incorporating literacy in creative ways. I also struggle with implementing other subjects into the curriculum, such as social studies, art, physical education, etc. Thanks so much for all of your help!

Hi Eric,
I just posted a comment on the polar science page, then realized that you might not see it. I love the activities you described (snow shelters, designing long undies) and am actually working on the next issue of Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears - and issue called "Keeping Warm." Your ideas fit perfectly with our theme, and I was wondering if you might be interested in writing an article for us. Send me an email at fries-gaither.1@osu.edu and we can talk about it in more detail.

Thanks!
Jessica

Hi Kim and Mary

Thanks for the welcome! I'm very glad to be here. Now that I've got a full week of school under my belt, I'm ready to be more active! Gonna have to look into the book group and I'll add my answers to the questions in a bit.

Hi Eric - Let me second Mary's welcome! So glad to see that you joined! Let me give you quick overview of the site - on the main page - the resources that we have developed are on the left - MSP2 Resources box and our blogs. We have lots of events - technology, content, and pedagogy. The archived recordings of the ones we've done so far are in the link - Webinar Archive in the MSP2 Resources box. And we have lots of groups!

Thanks for adding your profile information and your "real" photo! It would also be great if you go back into your profile and answer two additional questions that we just added - I need help with and I can help with. We want people to be able to search by those parameters.

In addition, we've just started a book club - the fall book is Omnivore's Dilemma - it would be great if you joined in. Welcome! Kim

Hi,

I'm a 6th grade math/science/social studies teacher in Essex Junction, Vermont. I'm very interested in integrating technology in my teaching. My other interests include differentiated instruction and project based learning. Looking forward to lots of good discussion and sharing of ideas.
