Hello and introduction

I joined a few days ago and have been thrilled with the great links and information that I've found already!

My name is Jenn Kurtz and we homeschool....I am what the homeschooling community calls an "accidental" homeschooler--meaning that I never thought this is what we would be doing. :-)

We have a 7 year old son (Reed) and a 5 year old daughter (Ali). Reed just graduated from 1st grade and when we asked him what he wanted as a reward he replied "I want volumes 1 and 2 of… Continue

Hope you join us online this Thursday, 1/13 at 4pm EST as we explore how reader's theater can be used to improve comprehension of informational text and help students learn science concepts. We'll focus on science-themed text, but the same principles can apply to other  content areas as well. You can find the link to participate, the descriptions, and archived recordings of all the webinars at http://wiki.nsdl.org/index.php/BeyondPenguins/Seminars

Hi Jennifer - Hope your summer is going well! I wanted to update you on our free webinars and hope you can join us for one of them soon.

We've had three Tech Talks so far - one on Interactive Notebooks, Moodle, and Digital Storytelling. You can get to the recordings of those by clicking on the Web Archive link.

You can see all our upcoming events by clicking on the Events tab. The next TechTalk topic is Using Wikis. We've got lots more topics to cover in the next few months - technology, pedagogy, content knowledge, all sorts of fun stuff! Any ideas on additional topics or feedback you have would be greatly appreciated! Kim

Hi, Jennifer,
Thanks for sharing. Your excitement about teaching, walking the learning path with your children, and your newfound interest in math is palpable! "Good on you!" as my Aussie friends say.
Consider sharing this excitement, and your post to me, with the larger MSP2 community. You already have some great examples, resources, and experiences to share.

The neat thing about sites like this is that there are multiple ways to connect and share.
The best way to tell about yourself is on you page (right here).
Now, you can do that by leaving a comment on your wall, you can create a blog post, you can add things to your profile... all can say things about you.

I like posting a blog. People can read it, add comments and give you feed back, and you can add to it as new things come up. Many classes use blogs as a way for students to document their learning. Its like an online journal and can be lots of fun.

Welcome, Jennifer! How many kiddoes are you teaching at home? We don't yet have many homeschool educators in the community, so am hoping to see this group grow. As a homeschool educator, you are particularly tuned in and expert at meeting the needs of your students, and, no doubt, have resources and insight to share with classroom-based educators. I hope you'll be willing to do so, and will also find resources and support to assist you, as well.

Hi Jennifer! Thanks for joining us, and welcome to the community. I'm sure you've got some unique and valuable experiences as a homeschool educator - especially since you cover such a wide variety of grade levels!

We've got lots of resources for middle school math and science teachers - look at the left side of the Main page - Math and Science Publications, Diigo lists, and two project blogs where we highlight exemplary online resources - Exemplary Resources for Middle School Math and Science and Connecting News with the National Science Education Standards. We're having some really good conversations about integrating technology and the math group is really starting to take off. Are there any specific issues or topics you would like to see addressed?

I'd also like to tell you about another project I'm involved with - a free online magazine called Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears. The goal of the project is to help elementary teachers integrate science and literacy instruction. We've got a lot of great content, including informational text written for students and available in downloadable books or e-books (with audio narration). Hope you can use it with your primary and elementary students!

Again, welcome! Jessica
