Eric Biederbeck replied to Nina's discussion 'Math is the bomb!' in the group Math
You are so correct Nina, That feeling of belonging be it through the hands-on activities or even the discussion is critical. Does traditional math instruction work? for some yes but as you say, we really need to make sure we are getting the…

Nina replied to Nina's discussion 'Math is the bomb!' in the group Math
I have watched some really great math classes and some really boring math classes. In general, the difference is the amount the students are 'invited' to become directly involved with the math, i.e. discussions, hands-on activities, group…

Eric Biederbeck replied to Nina's discussion 'Math is the bomb!' in the group Math
I think the more people differentiate their instruction instead of tracking students will help break down the negative conception that some students and parents have about math. When students feel they are stuck in the "low" group, I…

I love the Kagan structures in math classes. They make all the difference in student engagement while maintaining student accountability for learning!

Technology, technology, technology...voicethreads, podcasting, schoolpads, & "clickers" just to name a few. ALSO...this will be big for me (and our district) is the use of Kagan structures (kaganonline.com). We are wrapping up a…

Nina commented on Middle School Portal's group 'Math'
I have been pondering math education a lot lately. I believe our biggest issue (especially at middle school and high school levels) is student engagement. Some math classes are SOOOOO boring!! And if I, who love math, think so, what must many of our…

Nina commented on Todd Williamson's blog post 'MSP2 Tech Talk: Interactive Whiteboards'
I have just begun using an IWB for professional development for math teachers, since almost all our middle and high school math teachers have IWBs. It is so much fun and student engagement is so much greater.

Nina replied to Kim Lightle's discussion 'Is there a "math" gene?'
You know I have seen so many students come in to class believing they 'couldn't do math' and leaving class believing that they could... Although there are definitely those who rarely if ever have to work at 'getting it'…

Exploring Differentiated Instruction at Education Week Online

Thumbnail
May 15, 2009 from 3pm to 4pm
With student diversity growing dramatically and schools facing mounting pressure to boost achievement, differentiated instruction—the craft of accommodating and building on students' individual learning needs—has gained increased attention in recent years. But it can be difficult to implement effectively, and interpretations of what it means for instruction can vary.In this chat, Carol Ann Tomlinson, a leading authority on differentiated instruction, will discuss the core principles of the…See More

OK...I'm one of those folks who didn't enjoy math (I hesitate to admit it in this group!). I was in the top math classes in "junior" and "senior" high school only because of the way my school "tracked"…

One of the folks in the guidance counselor program at Ohio State told me one time (probably 3 years ago) that the best indicator of whether a student (male or female) goes to college is the mother's level of education. I wonder if more educated…

I so much agree with you, Lisa! And we seem to be one of the few countries in the world who feel there is some sort of a math gene! I believe it is possible to make math class enjoyable and engaging enough to give all students the feeling that they…

What drives me crazy is to hear parents, teachers, administrators...you get the idea...say, "I was never any good at math," in front of kids. It gives kids permission to be bad at math. You never hear people say, "I was never any good…

Hi Nina - Hope your summer is going well! I wanted to update you on our free webinars and hope you can join us for one of them soon.

We've had three Tech Talks so far - one on Interactive Notebooks, Moodle, and Digital Storytelling. You can get to the recordings of those by clicking on the Web Archive link.

You can see all our upcoming events by clicking on the Events tab. The next TechTalk topic is Using Wikis. We've got lots more topics to cover in the next few months - technology, pedagogy, content knowledge, all sorts of fun stuff! Any ideas on additional topics or feedback you have would be greatly appreciated and thanks for all your participation! Kim
