Timothy....this is an important conversation to throw out to the wider MSP2 network. Would you be willing to describe what you're seeing and experiencing along with you question on the MSP2 forum AND cross-post to the Math Group??
Welcome to MSP2! I am glad your web search brought you to us.
You mention needing some help as a new teacher. Is there any way I can help? If not, perhaps I can find some one to answer your questions.
I have worked with middle school students since 1974, and I love them!! Currently, I am semi-retired; however, I do a number of things - including supervising student teachers for the local university. It is always a pleasure to work with young teachers.
There are a number of other young teachers who are members here, as well as a number of pre-service teachers currently enrolled in universities.
Thanks for sharing, Timothy. Stunning (and sad) to think that students' lack of math proficiency is the reason they don't graduate high school! Is the district addressing that? If so, in what way?
You're absolutely right, though, hitting math (and reading) proficiency in the middle grades is crucial. Are you familiar with Balfanz's work on the markers for student graduation? If not, you mind find Putting Middle Grades Students on the Graduation Path informative.
Welcome to MSP2. Would you share a little bit about what you are studying and about your program? Are you in a middle grades teaching program? A science or math education program? Masters or bachelors level?
