Middle School Portal

the network for middle school math and science teachers

Kids in Middle school are going through a lot right now. While all the guys need Height Increase Shoes to hang with the girls and each classroom needs a Filtrete filter to hold back the body odor. Somehow the guys have not discovered that they need to wear deodorant. You would think their parents would tell them :)
Anyway, what accelerated Math programs do you guys find most helpful. My daughter is in a program that is doing Algebra 2 in 7th grade, Trig in 8th, and on to calculus in High School. This seems a bit much. What do you guys think?

I question the developmental appropriateness of trig in 8th grade myself. My district has in fact moved further away from such tracking and has opened up algebra (previously only for "accelerated students") to all 8th graders. Students need to fulfill several things (such as going to algebra seminar twice a month and maintaining a certain grade point average) to stay in algebra and if they do and do well enough on both the mid term and final they receive high school algebra credit and move to geometry in 9th grade. This seems to be working well. Obviously we still have some students who need to be in higher programs and so there are occasional 7th graders who are placed in the algebra program but this is not an every year thing. I think it allows the kids to be middle schoolers more, eases pressure from their parents and competition to get into those "high" classes.
