The trail from Glogster to drawing and mapping tools

The following is cross-posted to a discussion on the Integrating Technology Group

I was exploring Glogster this morning, wondering, "How can Glogster help in a learning and teaching setting?" My search for "education" on the Glogster site turned up a glog about Web 2.0 tools for classroom use.

Since I'm illiterate with Glogster, I can't comment on the quality of this site, but I did follow the links, and was intrigued with the list of drawing and mapping tools (which, by the way, are organized in Wikispaces):
So, my questions, now:
  • Which of these drawing and mapping tools do other you use?
  • Which ones do you use with your students?
  • Which ones do you use with your colleagues (for planning or professional development)?
And, of course....
  • Why?

Davilla,
Please direct your district IT staff to the FAQ portion of our site for information on unblocking text. We provide a number of ways to facilitate your use of the text function. Good Luck - Jim Dachos Education Manager - Glogster

My first criteria when selecting new tools is whether or not the program is "blocked" by our school district. Many times, I have found really neat tools at home, but when I get to school to share it, the site is blocked or many of its features aren't available. For example, I have been trying to get my students to try glogster edu for making interactive posters for geologic time. Outside of our school, all of the features work correctly. However, in my classroom, students can't edit text. It is so frustrating! I tell students to put everything in place and then add their text at home.

I have used Bubbl.us in my classroom, too. It was user-friendly for my students. They were able to easily create simple mind maps with little help from me.
